Transcript: Who? There were many characters but the main ones were Seth, Kendra, Grandpa Sorenson, and Muriel. Seth is courageous but sometimes his risky desisions come back to bite him. Kendra is the responsible "no fun" sister and unlike Seth could use a little courage and she is FairyKind. Grandpa is the caretaker of Fablehaven and his grandchildren are Seth and Kendra. His wife Grandma Sorenson was turned into a chicken. Muriel is a evil witch tied to a stump by a magical enchantment and if you need her to do a favor one knot dissapears and when no knots remain she is free. When? The story takes place in present time because they ride in a SUV. Where? The story took place on the Fablehaven Preserve in Conneticut. It enhances the story line because that is where magical creatures are and where Muriel and Buhumat are located. Atmospere? There was an atmospere of hope and nervousness throughout the whole book but especially when Kendra became FairyKind. Plot? Kendra and Seth Sorenson travel to their Grandpa and Grandma Sorenson's house while their parents are away with family on a Scandinavian cruise. At Fablehaven they meet Dale and Lena. Grandpa Sorenson left clues for Kendra and Seth about Fablehaven being a secret preserve for magical creatures. Kendra solved the puzzle involving six keys and a locked journal. When Kendra unlocks the journal it is mostly blank except for the words drink the milk. She and Seth drink the magical milk which allows them to see the mystical world full of magical beings. When Muriel is set free because they asked a favor she unleashes the demon Buhumat and Kendra has to save Fablehven before Buhumat takes over. Favorite Part? My favorite part is when Kendra went to the Fairy Queen because she isn't very courageous yet she took a huge risk to save her family instead of just saving herself. Fantasy Characteristics of a Fantasy There is elements that are not possible in real life (magical creatures talking animals magic powers). There are fights between good and evil, There is normally an unlikely hero, The main character or characters has a quest/destiny to save the world, and the end is normally in favor of the main character.

Transcript: The Savage Game of Lord Zarak Sarah Collingwood Sarah was the main character of the story. She was one of the Seven Sleepers. Lord Zarak Lord Zarak was the antagonist of the story. He was the assistant of the king, and was the boss of the slaves Josh Adams Josh Adams was also one of the Sleepers. Josh was on the quest with Sarah and then was sent to the dungeon as slave from the oders of Lord Zarak. Goel Goel was a wizard. He had many skills and was commander to the Seven Sleepers. The Sleepers looked up to him as a Father and obeyed his quests. Nuworld The Nuworld started once the oldworld was destroyed. Very few people survived. Some survivors that did, served to Goel. Lost Island The lost Island was where the Seven Sleepers first met. That was where they first met Goel and he assigned them their first quest. Forest After leaving the isand, the enormous eagles took the Seven Sleepers to the forests. That was where Josh was assigned the leader and everyone must obey his commands. One major scene that occures here was the rebirth of King Falmor Kingdom King Falmor's mansion was where his daughter and Lord Zarak lived. His kingdom was well guarded and the battle took place here. These were some of the weapons used from the Seven Sleepers and the enemies.

It's the idea that fantasy is impossible, yet we believe so strongly that it is real, that it becomes apart of us and our reality. ELL students, like native-born students, may welcome the idea of escapism, commonly found in the fantasy genre. ELL students can read fantasy literature and be taken out of their reality, which can sometimes be uncomfortable or scary, and place them in a world that is safer and more appealing. This world will help them develop their language skills and get them reading. Reading Comprehension: Familiar stories of right v. wrong; inner meanings to compare to own lives; inspires thoughtful reading due to engagement (Peregoy & Boyle, 1991). Transcript: What is Fantasy? Past Films Famous Actors Famous Directors Tim Burton Dark Fantasy Present Films Ian McKellen was the actor of Gandalf, the Wizard in Lord of the Rings. Johnny Depp was the actor of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean Fantasy In the 1990's, he created The Nightmare before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. One of his most recent films, Coraline, was released in 2009. Fantasy is a genre of fiction where the impossible or improbable can happen, it involves supernatural events , different worlds, and mythical creatures. Science fictions films and Horror films can sort of fall into the category of Fantasy genres because some of their films have the same properties. Fantasy films use the elements of imagination, surprise, magic, myths, unusual, and the phenomenal. The difference between Sci-Fi and Science Fantasy is Sci-Fi features unlikely events that are able to occur in the real world at some point. While Science Fantasy is similiar to Sci-Fi but the unlikely events cannot occur in the real world due to certain circumstances. Back in the day, fantasy film genres weren't as sophisticated as the technologically advanced films of today. Such as, Ghostbusters (1984) In 2009, James Cameron directed the science fantasy film Avatar, that won nine Academy Awards such as Best Picture and Best Director. Moderns films of today present new features with our new advanced technology. For example, Harry Potter. In conclusion, Fantasy is a really interesting genre because of all the variety it has, I see it as, all the genres into one but with more to add.

Transcript: --Fiction has many different branches including Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, and Modern Fantasy. --Modern Fantasy is a very broad category but has special features that make it much different than the other forms of fiction. --Fantasy usually includes some type of unreality or magic. Animal Fantasy Explores the possibilities offered by the supernatural. Including supernatural powers, communications with spirits, and communication with ghosts. High Fantasy Science Fiction --The story begins in the real world, but the main character is soon transported to another world which is often an enchanted realm. --The characters enter the fantasy world by some type of magic. --At the end of the story the protagonist usually returns to the real world but it Is not always by the same manner in which he or she left. when magic is replaced by advanced technological wonders. They have incredible and inconceivable characters and events are given rational scientific-sounding explanations. Animated Object Fantasy Prominent Fantasy Authors Humans or characters that engage in some totally unrealistic situation that makes the book fantasy rather than realistic fiction. --The main characters are usually animals that are capable of doing human activities such as wearing clothes, living in houses and cooking food. --Animal fantasy is very popular with younger children, so often teachers focus on these books. (Miniature humans, Flying people, talking with animals, extraordinary abilities) Extraordinary Person Human with Fantasy Character Unlikely Situation --Have an ordinary human and a fantasy creature as main characters. --The fantasy creature can be a monster, a strange beast, or even an element of nature. these types of stories bring to life inanimate objects such as a comical doll, a toy boat, a big machine, or a loving tree. --A fantasy work that follows the patterns set by the oral tradition of folklore, yet written by an identifiable author. --Can be any subgenre, such as literary ballad, literary fable, or literary myth. --The protagonist engages in a monumental struggle against a powerful evil force in the ageless struggle of good and evil. --They may begin in the real world but the major setting is a world inhabited by imaginary creatures and has its own time frame.
