Transcript: Who? There were many characters but the main ones were Seth, Kendra, Grandpa Sorenson, and Muriel. Seth is courageous but sometimes his risky desisions come back to bite him. Kendra is the responsible "no fun" sister and unlike Seth could use a little courage and she is FairyKind. Grandpa is the caretaker of Fablehaven and his grandchildren are Seth and Kendra. His wife Grandma Sorenson was turned into a chicken. Muriel is a evil witch tied to a stump by a magical enchantment and if you need her to do a favor one knot dissapears and when no knots remain she is free. When? The story takes place in present time because they ride in a SUV. Where? The story took place on the Fablehaven Preserve in Conneticut. It enhances the story line because that is where magical creatures are and where Muriel and Buhumat are located. Atmospere? There was an atmospere of hope and nervousness throughout the whole book but especially when Kendra became FairyKind. Plot? Kendra and Seth Sorenson travel to their Grandpa and Grandma Sorenson's house while their parents are away with family on a Scandinavian cruise. At Fablehaven they meet Dale and Lena. Grandpa Sorenson left clues for Kendra and Seth about Fablehaven being a secret preserve for magical creatures. Kendra solved the puzzle involving six keys and a locked journal. When Kendra unlocks the journal it is mostly blank except for the words drink the milk. She and Seth drink the magical milk which allows them to see the mystical world full of magical beings. When Muriel is set free because they asked a favor she unleashes the demon Buhumat and Kendra has to save Fablehven before Buhumat takes over. Favorite Part? My favorite part is when Kendra went to the Fairy Queen because she isn't very courageous yet she took a huge risk to save her family instead of just saving herself. Fantasies allow the reader to consider and speculate about central and sometimes painfully realistic themes in a way that is more palatable than in realistic fiction or fact (Kurkjian, 2006). Strengths: Creativity & Passion Incorporating into Multiple Disciplines Personalization & Engagement Our Genre Study Lucy & Kailyn For middle school-aged children, they develop "a greater sensitivity to more subtle violations of social and psychological reality." It's the idea that fantasy is impossible, yet we believe so strongly that it is real, that it becomes apart of us and our reality. ELL students, like native-born students, may welcome the idea of escapism, commonly found in the fantasy genre. ELL students can read fantasy literature and be taken out of their reality, which can sometimes be uncomfortable or scary, and place them in a world that is safer and more appealing. This world will help them develop their language skills and get them reading. Reading Comprehension: Familiar stories of right v. wrong; inner meanings to compare to own lives; inspires thoughtful reading due to engagement (Peregoy & Boyle, 1991). Features To Look for in Fantasy Literature What Fantasy Means to Us (Cruz, 2004) "With age, children become increasingly able to evaluate literature on the basis of their correspondence of social and psychological reality." This One is Nice Too! (Kurkjian, 2006) Landry, M.O., (1982) Age Appreciation Encouraging a Balanced Literacy Program "Children can be so engaged that, for the moment, they are totally immersed in the 'secondary world' of the story." (Sipe, 2006) 2. Fantasy seeks the undefinable; its subject is nothing less than the human spirit. This, in part, accounts for its powerful impact. Fantasy is never content with objective testimony to pragmatic reality; instead, it explores the world of human kind and its spiritual reality (Timmerman, 1983). What is Fantasy? A Working Definition How About This One? Examples of Fantasy Literature (Cruz, 2004) Oral Tradition Collected Stories Vague Setting Magical Characters that do not grow or change What's the Draw of Fantasy Literature? Fantastic Worlds, Characters, & Objects Time Shifts Talking Animals Magic Multiple Interpretations Call to the Quest Guides & Helpers Quest Challenges Goal of Quest Journey Home Fantasy Literature for Classroom Use SOURCES "For the genre of fantasy, elementary students have a "limited range of real life comparisons, centered primarily around the question 'does this exist in real life?'" ELL Students & The Fantasy Genre Fluency & Writing: Strengthens creative writing skills; tapping into prior knowledge; repetition; analytical reflections of the fantastical story; meaningful relationships to the characters & story itself Associated with an Author Setting is Detailed & Credible Characters Grow & Change "An irony about fantasy is that despite the fanciful characters, strange imaginary worlds, and bizarre situations encountered, it has the power to help us better understand reality." (Kurkjian, 2006) When children read about a fantastical world, far removed from their real lives, it is much safer to think about issues of loss, betrayal, and change. What ELL Students Bring: Background Knowledge Cultural Diversity Unique Life Experiences Possible Difficulties: Figures of Speech Formulaic Expressions Metacognition Phase & Analysis Possible Advantages: Predictable Plots Engagement (Entertainment Factor) Escapism Weaknesses: Disorganization Caught Up in Imagination Aspect Finding a Balance Cruz, M. Johnny Depp was the actor of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean Fantasy In the 1990's, he created The Nightmare before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. One of his most recent films, Coraline, was released in 2009. Fantasy is a genre of fiction where the impossible or improbable can happen, it involves supernatural events , different worlds, and mythical creatures. Science fictions films and Horror films can sort of fall into the category of Fantasy genres because some of their films have the same properties. Fantasy films use the elements of imagination, surprise, magic, myths, unusual, and the phenomenal. By Arby M Johnny Depp James Cameron Ian McKellen Science Fantasy Dark Fantasy is the use of fantasy properties but instead, make your audience feel scared and uneasy. Sub Genres Did you know? The difference between Sci-Fi and Science Fantasy is Sci-Fi features unlikely events that are able to occur in the real world at some point. While Science Fantasy is similiar to Sci-Fi but the unlikely events cannot occur in the real world due to certain circumstances. Back in the day, fantasy film genres weren't as sophisticated as the technologically advanced films of today. Such as, Ghostbusters (1984) In 2009, James Cameron directed the science fantasy film Avatar, that won nine Academy Awards such as Best Picture and Best Director. Moderns films of today present new features with our new advanced technology. For example, Harry Potter. In conclusion, Fantasy is a really interesting genre because of all the variety it has, I see it as, all the genres into one but with more to add.
