Transcript: In Memoriam Alfred Lord Tennyson (sections 1, 7, 82, and 130 Characteristically, throughout In Memoriam, Alfred Lord Tennyson employs the imagery of natural elements in order to portray his feelings and emotions after the death of his close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam. Perhaps the most poignant of these images is that of the wind, represented in many ways throughout the poem, and linked closely to the concept of calm despair' and wild unrest'. Abigail Iliffe Experts Say: Tennyson is one of the best known poets of the Victorian era, and indeed his stylistic features and subjects epitomize the period. In Memoriam is one of his major works, and in this elegy he mourns the death of his best friend Arthur Hallam. I shall be discussing section LV specifically; first analyzing how Tennyson structures this section then discussing how it fits in with the rest of the poem which is essentially a dedication to his best friend and an exploration of immortality, his faith, and the meaning of loss. Poet- Alfred Lord Tennyson Completed in 1849 It is a requiem of a friend from Cambridge who died suddenly of a cerebral haemorrhage in Vienna in 1833. Since it was written over a period of 17 years, its meditation on the search for hope after great loss touches upon many of the most important and deeply-felt concerns of Victorian society. It contains some of Tennyson's most accomplished lyrical work, and is an unusually sustained exercise in lyric verse. It is widely considered to be one of the great poems of the 19th century. The original title of the poem was "The Way of the Soul", and this might give an idea of how the poem is an account of all Tennyson's thoughts and feelings as he copes with his grief over such a long period - including wrestling with the big philosophico-scientific questions of his day. It is perhaps because of this that the poem is still popular with and of interest to modern readers. Transcript: Overall, this human experience has taught me a lot about my individuality as a whole, and how the general public needs to be more aware of human nature. Before this project, I know very little about PTSD, and I still struggle with comprehending it, but now I'm more aware about it's effects and how we need to take responsibility for the veterans coming home, thanks to my project. Because of this projects, i will become a more open-minded and responsible citizen because of the lessons taught through this experience. The makings of this Project I chose PTSD because my family was in the miltary, and I wanted to see if my family had connections to it. During my research, one fact that made me feel emotional was that five active duty troops attempt suicide every day. That made me scared as all get out. Since my older brother is starting off as a second lieutenant in that army, he could be one of those five, and to me, scared me deeply. During this project, I found there are many ways to help. One way that many people do is volunteer to help around at Volunteers of America. In our Lansing area, they have a facility that houses around 40 veterans daily. Although it may not help many, it can at least help them get back on their feet for a while Creating the Human Experience, part 2 For my documentation, I decided not to go with the usual approach of filming my human experience. I instead decided to use a recording of one of the songs we played at our band concert, called Symphony No. 1, In Memoriam, Dresden. In our band class, our band director taught us alot about the history about the day and how it impacted us. We worked hard on getting the message across to our audience and getting to play with the emotion that would have been felt on that day. Although the song is from an older time (1945), many of the people who have PTSD feel the same type of mindset as the people who were horribly bombed on that day. Thus, which is why I chose to do a song over other ideas as because music moves the soul. Music speaks to us in a way that words or visuals can't begin to speak. My documentation of my human experience does move others. when our band premiered the piece at our concert, the audience was moved to tears, some even having to leave the room because it was that emotional. The process of writing my press release was easier than I thought it was going to be. To help with this process, I used CBS.com to help with my outline of my press release. Also, I used stats from the PTSD Foundation of America and PTSD United to provide truth to my writing. As for leaving out infomation, I didn't really leave out a lot. Most of the info I left out was just describing words, not important facts. For the letter, I had to create more fragment sentences. The reason I had to was so i could fit in the under 175 words to the LSJ. Conclusion In Memoriam Getting my press release and sending it out. Creating the human experience to start, just click on the gray button to the left, and then present Part 2, Continued: I picked the documentary Now, After by Blue Three Productions as my secondary media. This complements my first secondary media because it shows how the music creates and reacts the faces you see in the video. I picked this to spread my message because often we do not see the side effects of internal struggles. Often too much we focus on what we can see, but not what we can feel. With this video, it shows the struggle of Vets coping with PTSD, getting an inside look of what it looks like and be more aware of those signs in our surroundings.
