Transcript: World War 2 On December 7, US intercepted a written message from Japan who was threatening war. A warning was sent but the general received it after the attack. Unfortunately, the US was not prepared. There was a sighting of planes 50 miles away. It was reported, but they thought it was American that was scheduled to land from California. Hence, the warning was ignored. The attack took place on December 7 1941,Japanese fighters laid waste on Pearl Harbor. The attack was divided into two different waves. The first wave consisted of bombers and torpedoes; its main objective was destroy pearl Harbor utterly. The second wave was primarily used for finishing off anything that survived the first wave. First Wave Consisted of: 1st Group: •50 Nakajima B5N bombers targeted for Pearl Harbor’s aircraft carries and battleships. •40 B5N bombers armed with type 91 torpedoes 2nd Group:•53 Aichi D3A Val dive bombers aimed for Ford Island and Wheeler Field3rd Group:•45 Mitsubishi A6M Zeke fighters for air control strafing targeting the Ford Island, Hickam Field, Wheeler Field, and Barber’s Point. In the end, most of Pearl Harbor was devastated. In the 90 minutes that this battle occurred, the US Pacific Fleet's air crafts and battleships were destroyed. LEST WE FORGET December 7th was a very solemn and dark time for the Americans as they lost many soldiers that day. Though many mourn the loses of that day, they remember their soldiers as we Canadians remember the deaths of our soldiers. Remembrance Day is a day to remember those who died for us, those who gave their lives to keep us safe. Not only should we remember, we should appreciate and be grateful for what those soldiers did for us. It is because of them we are here now living safely and happily. Reason #2 The Americans were concerned that the Japanese would land on Hawaii so they set up troops around the perimeters of the main islands of Hawaii. All precautions were taken to insure that the citizens of Hawaii were safe and that no Japanese would in danger them anymore. Airports were shut down and business centers were locked down. Government buildings were turned into military offices. Attack This is a close up picture of Pearl Harbor. Why Was the Attack a Turning Point? Without the Pearl Harbor tragedy, the US might have not participated in the Second World War, and the Allies may not have been able to win the war The harbor and the surrounding land is a naval base for the US, and is also where the head office of the US Pacific Fleet is. In the beginning, Pearl Harbor's water was too shallow for ships to dock at, but in 1899, the harbor was remade. President Roosevelt had trouble convincing Isolationists to allow US to enter WW2. The attack allowed US to retaliate, silencing Roosevelt's political opponent's voice Today, Pearl Harbor is mostly a memorial. Pearl harbor has become a popular tourist attraction. There are many tours and sites that tourist can go to to learn and see the site at which the battle took place. One of the main attractions of Pearl Harbor is the memorial for the sunken ship the USS Arizona. A viewing bridge was built over the sunken ship for visitor to see. The Hawaiins call this harbour, "Pu'uloa" The Japanese thought it'd be better to attack the harbor because they knew that most of the forces there were naval and it held the majority of the American's naval forces. Reason #1: Why was Pearl Harbor Attacked? What Pearl Harbor is Like Today Pearl Harbor's location was perfect for an attack. The Japanese were considering attacking coastal cities like San Francisco. They chose the harbor because Hawaii was closer to Japan than the United States was. The Japanese also thought that if they were to attack the mainland, they wouldn't be able to head back home without being pursued and attack by the other forces of the US. It would also be quicker, instead of sailing all the way to America Conclusion Hawaii After the Attack Pearl Harbor is on the coast of Hawaii. Japan had ambassadors working in the capitol. They were trying to persuade the government that Japan didn't have any plan to attack the US soon. People were starting to get suspicious so they sent a fleet to attack then, instead of delaying the plan. In the wake of the attack, 15 Medals of Honor, 51 Navy Crosses, 53 Silver Stars, four Navy and Marine Corps Medals, The first attack lasted only about 45 minutes. In their first attack the Japanese sunk the USS Arizona, Oklahoma, West Virginia and California.

Transcript: The attack of Pearl Harbor took place on December 7, 1941 in Oahu, Hawaii. The attack was by the Japs. They used 353 fighter planes, and torpedos. They were sent off in two waves launched by six aircraft carriers. 2,402 Americans were killed and 1,282 were wounded. The goal of the attack was three things: first was to destroy American Fleet units (group of ships), to give Japan time to strengthen it's military and give it a small chance of having a fight in the war, and to have an effect on American morale in hopes that it would prevent them from commiting into a war that extended into the Pacific Ocean and Dutch East Indies. There were two main disadvantages with this. The first was that the three most important American ships were not even at Pearl Harbor during the bombing time. The second was that targeted ships were in shallow water so it would be easy to salvage the ships. Eighteen total American Battleships were afftected.The emotional toll of the attack on Pearl Harbor is still very evident today. Many lives were lost. Transcript: ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR Naval base Pearl Harbor The attack on Pearl Harbor was executed by the Imperial Japanese Navy on the morning of December 7, 1941. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, was directed against the Pacific Fleet of the U.S. Navy and air forces defending the area. The attack destroyed 13 warships and 188 aircraft, also killed 2,403 U.S. soldiers and 68 civilians. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto planned the attack as the beginning of the Pacific campaing of World war II. The aim of the attack, led by Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi, was to neutralize the enemy fleet for a long period, with the aim of occupying the western colonies in southeast Asia, to break the economic that Japan was being placed under the previous year. The long term effect was a common view is that the Japaneses were victims of evil called the victory because of the ease with wich they obtained their first victories. Despite the perception of this battle as a devastating blow against the united states, only five navy ships were lost permanentaly. This only had a small military impact due to the failed attempt of the japanese navy to sink U.S. aircraft carriers, but although the carriers had been sunk, it would have helped significantly to japan. The attack firmly drew the United States and it's industrial economy and service to the second World War, which led to the defent of the axis world wide. The U.K prime minister, Winston Churchill, on hearing that the attack on Pearl Harbor had finally led the U.S. into the war, wrote being saturated and satiated with emotion and sensation, went to bed and slept the sleep insurance and grateful. The allied victory in this war and the subsequent emergence of America as adominant world power has shaped international politics ever since. On 8, December, the U.S. Congress declared war on Japan, the only vote against the Jeannette Rankin. The United States was angry about the attack and they had not received notice of severance of relations after considering both actions as treacherous. Roosevelt signed the declaration of war on the same day, referring to the former " a date which will live in infamy " address to the joint session of Congress. Transcript: At 6:00 a.m. on December 7, the six japanese carriers launched a first wave of 181 planes composed of torpedo bombers, dive bombers, horizontal bombers and fighters. The purpose of the simultaneous attacks was to destroy the American planes before they could rise to intercept the Japanese. It centered around six heavy aircraft carries accompanied by 24 supporting vessels. A seperate group of submarines was to sink any American warships that escaped the Japanese carrier force. Japans own, Admiral Isoraku Yamamoto, planned a perfect sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. He knew it would be the perfect place to attack. At 7:00 p.m. an alert operator of an army radar station at Opana spotted the approaching first wave of the attack force. The officers to whom those reports were relayed did not consider them significant enough to take action. By bombing the navy, they managed to cripple any efforts at an attack force allowing them immediatly to retaliate. Within the first minutes of the attack all of the battleships adjacent to Ford Island had taken bomb and torpedo hits, sinking quickly In October 1941,the naval general staff gave final approval to Yamamotos plan, which called for the formation off an attack force smmanded by Vice Admiral Chuici Naguma. On December 7, 1941 their was an attack on Pearl Harbor that would change peoples lifes forever When japanese decided to Of more than 90 ships at anchor in Pearl Harbor, the primary targets were the eight battleships anchored there, seven were moored on Battleship Row along the southeast shore of Ford Island while USS Pennsylvania lay in drydock across the channel This killed 1.177 crewman, the greatest loss of life on any ship that day and about half the total number of Americans killed. Nagumo's fleet assembled in the remote anchorage at Tankon Bay, in the Kurile Islands and departed in strictest secrecy for Hawaii on November 26, 1941 They decided to bomb Pearl Harbor, as it held the majority of the American naval forces in the Pacific When the attack ended shortly before 10:00 a.m. less than two hours after it began, the American forces has paid a fearful price. 21 ships of the U>S> Pacific Fleet were sunk or damaged. Benefits When the Japanese decided to attack America they knew that almost all of our immediate forces were naval. So they were looking for the perfect naval base. The Japanese aircrews achieved complete surprise when they hit American ships and military installations on Oahu shortly before 8:00 a.m. They attacked military airfields at the same time they hit the fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor. In hours before dawn, the US Navy vessels spotted an unidentified submarine periscope near the entrance to Pearl Harbor. With the Japanese war effort crippled due to the oil embargo, Japan had little other choice but to attack the U.S. The plan was to cripple the U.S naval forces docked at Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor Attacks By Logan Preece The Oil Embargo In 1941 after Japan agreed to join the Axis Powers and invaded Dutch controlled Indochina, the US passed an embargo on all oil and rubber products being exported to Japan. This cut around 90% of Japan's oil supply. Japan's Plan A total of 8 battleships, 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, and 3 auxiliary ships were destroyed during the attack. The day after the attack, President Roosevelt gave his famous "Infamy" speech. Over 2000 american lives were lost. The aftermath. The Japanese attack consisted of three waves. The first was the primary attack, it's main objective was to take out key targets (mainly battleships and air craft carriers). The second wave was used to take out whatever the first wave didn't. And the third was to cover the Japanese escape.
